NDC Has Chosen A Guinea Fowl As Their 2024 Candidate – Abuakwa South MP Mocks Mahama
The Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to run for president for the fourth consecutive time.
While not mentioning Mahama by name, Atta Akyea compared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nominating Mahama as their presidential candidate to presenting a guinea fowl (akonfem) for the elections.
Hon Atta Akyea, who is supporting Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for the 2024 elections, made this statement while addressing party delegates in his constituency in the presence of Bawumia. He contrasted the NDC’s choice of candidate with Bawumia’s digital innovation achievements, referring to Bawumia as “Mr. Digital.”
Atta Akyea’s comment draws on a past incident in which John Mahama was criticized for a project that aimed to provide guinea fowls to the northern regions of Ghana but ended up with many of them disappearing, reportedly flying off to neighboring Burkina Faso. This incident has since been used humorously in political discourse.
Vice President Bawumia is known for his involvement in various digital initiatives and innovations under the current government. The NPP is currently in the process of selecting its flagbearer for the 2024 elections, and a super delegates conference is scheduled to narrow down the 10 candidates to five ahead of the main contest in November 2023
